Abstract

During the process of cleaning diesel exhaust, the Mn-based mullite SmMn2O5 is proved to display great potential as a replacement catalyst of Pt in NO oxidation. Fundamentally, there is rare study on the NO oxidation catalytic mechanism and the mullite physical properties. In this paper, the pure SmMn2O5 mullite nanoparticles have been synthesized. Furthermore, the optical measurements and the density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been performed to investigate the physical properties behind. The absorption spectra indicate the coexistence of direct and indirect near-band-edge transition. To elucidate the band gap type, photoluminescence emission spectra under different excitation energies are proposed. A red-shift of emission peak is observed, and the emission peak intensity drops significantly of an order which may be attributed to the change from direct transition to indirect transition. To further clarify the near-band-edge transition feature, band structure is calculated through DFT calculations. From the band structure, it shows an indirect gap of 0.91 eV. Importantly, the second bottom of the conduction band is 0.2 eV higher relative to the conduction band minimum, resulting in a direct band gap 1.08 eV, which successfully explains confusion of the optical measurements. From the analysis of the density of states, the d-band centers of Mn3+ and Mn4+ ions are below the Fermi level. The filled bonding states and unfilled anti-bonding states imply a relative strong chemical Mn-O bonding. Moreover, a series lanthanide mullite oxides AMn2O5 (A=La, Ce, Pr, Sm, Gd, Tb, Lu) are calculated to study the electronic structures of Mn-Mn  dimers, i.e., potential catalytic sites of NO oxidation according to previous study[1]. In such as way, our study  provides a way to link material properties and catalytic performance.
