PHOTOELECTROCHEMICAL REDUCTION OF NITRATES BY NANOPOROUS SI PHOTOELECTRODE

Abstract
Nitrate solution were photoelectrochemically reduced into nitrite using both planar and nanoporous p-Si(100) electrode, which is a rate limit reaction step for nitrate reduction. Similar to previous report, the planar p-Si electrode shows low activity for photoelectrochemical reduction of nitrate. Interestingly, once planar Si was metal assisted etched into high surface nanoporous Si, the reaction of nitrate reduction into nitrite process can be efficient promoted by nanoporous Si electrode under illumination with visible light, which exhibited in over 80% Faradaic efficiency.
