hydrogen production BY coal slurries electrolysis in alkaline electrolyte WITH a novel CATALYST and USING Non-noble metal aNodes
Last modified: 2014-10-15
Abstract
In this paper, coal slurries electrolysis was studied in alkaline electrolyte for hydrogen production with a novel catalyst KMnO4. The result showed that the performance of KMnO4 is similar to Fe3+ which can promote the coal slurries elctrolysis. The utmost current densities of 51.6mA•cm-2 and 0.26mA•cm-2 were obtained during electrolysis at 0.6V vs. Hg/HgO and at room temperature 25oC with adding 0.1M KMnO4 and no KMnO4 into 3.0M NaOH electrolyte, repectively. In addition, those non-noble metal electrode materials, such as carbon steel, Cu, Ni, Fe and graphite were used as anodes and among those carbon steel, Cu, Ni displayed better electro-catalytic performance while Fe and graphite showed worse catalytic activity than Pt did. Some operating conditions such as NaOH and KMnO4 concentration, coal particle size were also studied. It was observed that all of the above factors affected hydrogen production on coal slurries electrolysis. The changes of minerals and organic functional groups in coal was proved taken place via FTIR analysis.
