Abstract

This research attempts to ensure system safety while to maximize system efficiency under safe operation conditions by addressing steady and dynamic state analysis for solid oxide fuel cell(SOFC) systems. This paper focus on the optimization for SOFC systems mainly in two aspects, including working in high efficiency safely and transient load following ability. Firstly, a current based 5kW SOFC stand-alone system (primarily comprising a planar SOFC stack, a burner, and two exchangers) is developed, in which special considerations for SOFC system temperature management and fuel inlet flow rate directly control are conducted by introducing an air bypass manifold and current-mode control technology is applied in the electronic control unit(ECU). Secondly, selecting fuel utilization (FU), air excess ratio (AR), bypass ratio (BP) and stack current (Is)

as operating parameters, then an optimal relationship between the system efficiency and these operating parameters is proposed. Particularly, a traverse optimization process including cubic convolution interpolation algorithm are proposed to obtain optimal operating points(OOPs) with the maximum efficiency. Then the effects of various operating parameters under optimal steady-state condition of the SOFC system is investigated. Finally, according to the OOPs, for avoiding fuel exhaustion and satisfying temperature constrains three trajectory design methods (step, multistep and parabola power switch scheme) are designed and find parabola power switch scheme would be the best one by comparison. Then different switch time is compared to find the shortest one to guarantee SOFC plants run safely and fastly during load following.

The static results reveal two important system characteristics: (1) Bypass  manifold can only improve SOFC system performance in a limited operation range within 3600W, and BP has an upper limit value 0.2 when SOFC system output power is between 1000W and 5000W under optimal operating condition. (2) Values of stack voltage, BP and system efficiency reduce with the increase of SOFC system output power under optimal operating condition in general. The dynamic results reveal four important system characteristics: (1) Switch time, temperature safety, fuel exhaustion-those are major considerations for SOFC system load following. (2) Fuel exhaustion is easier in Current-Based Fuel Control (CBFC) strategy than Voltage-Based Fuel Control (VBFC). (3) If the switch time is too short, temperature will change sharply and then probably exceed the bounds and fuel will be starved. (4) Maximum PEN temperature gradient and burner temperature should be key control variables due to their sensitive to power switch. This paper presents a new-style direct optimization algorithm for SOFC system, it also provide an optimal reference trajectory for control design, where the system is safe during load following and efficiency is optimal in pre- and post- control. Significantly, The integrated analysis including thermoelectric analysis (thermo-safety and efficiency-optimization) under static condition and load following under dynamic condition is firstly presented internationally.
