Abstract

Ni-Y2O3 stabilized ZrO2 (Ni-YSZ) cermet is the state-of-the-art anode material for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) because of its excellent electrochemical performance in hydrogen fuel. However, it shows some critical performance issues, including Ni particle agglomeration, redox instability and carbon deposition in hydrocarbon fuels; and therefore novel approaches enabling Ni-YSZ anode are highly desirable. In the present study, impregnation of Ni with addition of MgO is adopted to enhance the microstructural tability of Ni-YSZ anode; and an extra catalytic layer is imposed on the top of Ni-YSZ functional anode for on-cell hydrocarbon reforming.  The improved performance results are reported and discussed.
