Abstract

The slow cathodic ORR kinetics is a big challenge in a fuel  cell [1]. Up to now, Pt is the best catalyst for ORR due to its  high catalytic activity. However, the high cost and the  insufficient electrochemical durability of Pt have limited the  further commercialization of this technology. Looking for new  non-precious metal alternative catalysts to replace Pt  becomes the current key issue. In this regard, carbon-based transition metal macrocyclic complexe catalysts, due to  their relatively higher catalytic activity and stability, have  become one of the most promising candidates to replace Pt/C  catalyst [2,3]. However, for revealing the mechanism of ORR  and improving the ORR activity, we should know the active site  in these catalysts, although there is a consensus that carbon,  nitrogen and transition metals are all considered to be  indispensable elements for the ORR activity [4]. Particular to  transition metals, there is still a controversy whether it is a part  of the active sites in these macrocyclic complexes. In this work,  with carbon-supported copper phthalocyanine tetrasulfonic acid  tetrasodium salt, CuTSPc/C, as a target, the role of transition  metal in macrocycle complexe was investigated by acid-leaching procedures.
