Abstract

Thin film (200 nm) gadolinium-doped ceria (GDC) electrolyte for micro solid oxide fuel cells (MSOFC) were deposited on Pt upper electrode and isotropic metallic oxide (SrRuO3) with to the thin films grown on SrTiO3 substrates by RF sputtering. GDC film showed a nanocrystalline structure. The thin films was dense and was fabricated in situ by solide-state reaction of ceria and gadolinia. The performance of the fuel cells is limited by three loss mechanisms: Ohmic losses in the substrates and connecting wires; polarization losses through gas diffusion; and losses by activation polarization. Therefore, present research trend is to lowering the operating temperature down to 450 - 650 ℃.
