Abstract

Various carbon supports such as Acetylene Black, Vulcan XC, Ketjen black, Black Pearl, carbon nanotube, carbon aerogel and graphene are used to elucidate the role of carbon support. Based on the unit cell test, carbon supports not only interact with metal electronically that influence the work function of metal or metal alloy, but also provide physical channels for mass transport where reactant and product can easily reach to and leave the reaction sites. Our experimental data indicate that it is possible to improve the fuel cell performance with a proper choice of carbons.
