Abstract

Hollow carbon spheres (HCSs) are employed as carbon supports in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). HCSs have been synthesized through a facile hydrothermal method using silica particle and glucose as a template and carbon precursor, respectively. Pt and MoOx were directly deposited on the surface of the HCSs by an incipient wet method, using the NaBH4 as the reductant. The as-prepared catalyst was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Finally, the electrocatalytic activity of the as-prepared catalysts toward oxidation of methanol was studied. The PtMoOx/HCSs electrode showed significantly higher electrocatalytic activity and more stability for methanol oxidation compared with Pt/HCSs and commercial carbon (Pt/XC-72) electrode. The strong electrocatalytic activity of PtMoOx/HCSs electrode can be ascribed to the high surface area of hollow carbon spheres and the assistance of MoOx.
