Abstract
To achieve high temperature operation of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), preferably under ambient pressure, phosphoric acid doped polybenzimidazole membrane represents an effective approach, which in recent years has motivated extensive research activities. High temperature PEMFC is on the Danish national strategic lines aiming at cogeneration of heat and power (CHP) units fueled with natural gas through the existing infrastructure, which are also the most obvious early markets for fuel cells. Through national and EU programs Danish private companies and research institutions are involved in all linkages of the technological value chain from fundamental materials, component fabrication, to stack construction and system integration. This talk starts with a summary of the Danish activities followed by a review on recent progress of material and technology research in the HT-PEMFC area, including polymer synthesis, membrane fabrication and modification, catalysts and supports, and fuel cell performance. Emphasis is made on durability issues and status of the art under both steady and dynamic operational modes. Further efforts are also outlined to the future work.
